Montserrat & Wine Tour
Amazing natural beauty - and wine!
Montserrat is Barcelona’s number one day trip and the majesty of the crenellated mountains, upon which the sacred abbey was built, is deservedly world famous.
Whilst you can get to Montserrat by train it is surprisingly costly, which is just one reason why Barcelona Life recommends this full-bodied excursion, which not only provides comfortable transport to the “jagged mountain”, but also takes you to a historic 10th century castle for a regal Catalan lunch, followed by a tour of the castle’s vineyards and some wine tasting.
The excursion leaves Barcelona city centre at 8:45am every day (set your alarms!), arriving at Montserrat before 10am, thus giving you plenty of time to explore the mountain’s natural park and the abbey, including the Black Madonna, and the chance to hear the magical l’Escolania Boys’ Choir sing at 1pm.
At 1:45pm you are then driven to the nearby castle for a top quality traditional meal, before your guide reveals the fertile vineyards surrounding it, as well as selected parts of the ancient fortress interior (you will be with the only tour company allowed to do so!).
Finally you are treated to a wine tasting session with an expert oenologist, where you’ll get to see just how good wines from this part of Spain are.
The excursion is both very popular, but still intimate, as there is a maximum of 15 people per guide, and your group , and is very reasonably priced at 94 euros per head (transport, guide, lunch, wines and cheese all included).
Update: our partner for this trip has offered Barcelona Life readers a 5% discount so in fact it will work out as 89 euros per person. You’ll receive your coupon code when you get in touch.
