Need to consult an English speaking doctor in Barcelona? Here’s a go-to list of GPs, consultants and specialists that speak your language…

Visiting the doctors can be a stressful experience for many of us, but on this page we aim to make the experience a little less taxing by highlighting some English-speaking GPs and specialists, so at least you don’t have to add communication issues to your worries.

Public Healthcare

Expats who are legally Spanish residents can apply for the Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual (TSI) card, which entitles you to free public healthcare. In these cases, you can head down to your nearest CatSalut clinic with your card and see a doctor for free (although it’s hit or miss whether they will speak English, and using the TSI is more comfortable solution for those expats who have mastered Spanish or Catalan).

Tourists and travellers should be aware if their home country has a reciprocal healthcare agreements with Spain, which means you can access free public healthcare in the case of an emergency. You will need the relevant health card (EHIC for Europeans, GHIC for Brits), plus your passport, to access healthcare in this way. If you don’t have reciprocal health agreement, we would strongly advise getting travel insurance for your trip (and it’s never a bad idea to have be insured even if you have a reciprocal health card!).

Private Healthcare

The other way you can see a doctor is simply by booking an appointment and paying for it as a private customer, and prices in Barcelona are usually reasonable. Expect to pay between €30-100 for a consultation (afterwards, taking the necessary blood tests etc. and a follow up visit may add to those costs).

Expats of a certain age, or those who need to visit a doctor more than once in a while, would be advised to consider health insurance, which enable you to access private healthcare as much as you require it for a monthly fee. Not every private clinic collaborates with every insurance firm however, so best check who your local clinics work with first, before taking out a policy with any given firm.

Assuming you are not able to access the public healthcare, and / or prefer to be sure of speaking to a doctor in English, this list of private practitioners below should come in handy…
