Life on the ocean waves! That's what it's all about. Blues skies, salty air, and the majesty of the Mediterranean unfurling in front of you as you sail out of Barcelona's ports thirsty for adventure. (Hopefully with a copy of Moby Dick and a bottle of rum tucked inside your cabin for good measure). Undoubtedly Barcelona is one of the best cities in the world for sailing holidays with its almost-guaranteed good weather, the wealth of picturesque coastal towns along the Costa Brava and or course the city's proximity to magical islands, like Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza!

The joy of going on a sailing trip of course is that you can make it as active or passive as you want it to be. Aspiring Buccaneers can spend their time in Barcelona learning the ropes (quite literally) of this ancient art form on a RYA accredited sailing course that will have them hoisting, tacking and reefing up and down the golden coastline of the Costa Brava. Whilst experienced sailors and able-bodied seamen can hire/charter a yacht from Barcelona and take a leisurely (or not so leisurely) cruise around the Mediterranean, heading up to France or further down to Spain as they wish.

However, even if you don't know your port from your starboard (and have little intention of learning) you can still enjoy a fantastic sailing holiday in Spain - by renting a yacht with a qualified skipper (aye aye Captain!) who will do all the hard work for you. You might still have to yank the odd rope and make yourself useful, but the best part of the day can be spent drinking champagne on deck, practicing your dives off starboard, and working on your tan. Now that's what we call a holiday!

There are a number of yacht charter companies operating out of Barcelona who will rent or hire you a variety of boats, including sailing yachts, motorboats and catamarans. If you're an experienced and qualified sailor you can leave a deposit and hire a yacht bareboat (ie. without a skipper/crew) for private charter; however most companies also provide the option of hiring a professional captain to make sure your sailing holiday doesn't end in you shipwrecking yourself on a desert island and being forced to grow a Tom Hanks-style beard (the horror!).
