Royal Ramblas Hotel

Four stars on Las Ramblas

If you’ve come to Barcelona for the architecture you might want to close your eyes as you approach the Royal Ramblas – it’s a basically a vast linear block suspended over the thoroughfare with Hotel Royal written in golden lettering.

Despite being somewhat aesthetically-challenged, the hotel remains a great choice of accommodation for anyone who simply demands to be in the thick of it, right here on Las Ramblas – Barcelona’s most famous avenue. The bustle is non-stop, even past midnight, but thanks to air-con (summer only) and soundproofing you needn’t shy away from a street-side room.

In fact, we’d go further and demand one. Interiors are tastefully decorated and comfortable and the service is worthy of its four stars. For more great places to stay head to our Barcelona hotels guide.

WARNING: THIS HOTEL IS HAZARDOUS. The room was updated nicely, but extremely tiny with no space for the bed, so they built up the step and laid the mattress. Window is small, not opening not accessible. Very dark and claustrophobic. When we entered the AC was set for freezing temperatures and we weren’t able to control it and it was strong smell of artificial aroma. Called the front desk and they said they can control temps from there! We asked to turn it off. From that day on (stayed for 3 nights) we felt weird “technical” odor, which is clear now was “masked” by intense aroma. Both of us started experience nausea, which lasted for the whole duration of our stay. When we were outside - nausea was disappearing. It became clear that there was some harmful fumes, probably in the room finishes (walls and ceiling are paneled). A lot of cheap finishes from China are hazardous due to harmful fumes they release. Especially in the warm temperatures. Since we turned AC off, fumes became more prominent. The room can never be ventilated due to no window. No wonder hotel keeps abnormally freezing temps and masking fumes with aroma. We became so sick with nausea, dizziness etc, that we changed hotel. The one we have now has window open and bright and not claustrophobic. This should be a warning to travelers. Not only these fumes makes one immediately unwell, it could potentially be provoking malignancy. I anticipate a generic response from hotel something like: we regret you felt it this way bla-bla, bla-bla.
