Catalonia, and in particular the Penedes region, just south of Barcelona, is famous for its vineyards and fine wines, particularly of course for the sparkling white known as Cava. During this extensive wine tasting tour you'll visit two beautiful boutique wineries in the company of an extremely knowledgeable local sommelier and guide, who will be able to talk you through the fascinating history of Cava and wine production in the region, and offer you insights about the local terroir and indigenous grape varieties. At each winery you'll be invited to explore the vineyards and cellars, and more importantly of course enjoy plenty of wine tasting of the local Catalan red, white and sparkling varieties all in an intimate environs (on this tour you'll be avoiding the touristic wineries!). The itinerary for the day also includes a three course Catalan lunch at an authentic restaurant, where you can meet and chat with the chef about the local cuisine. The price of this personalised and private tour is €180 per person for two people, and €150 per person for three or more people. That price includes private transport to and from Barcelona, with hotel pick up, and all wine and food for the day (ie. you won't find a better price for this level of service!). Simply email for more details or to book.
I have toured in a number of wine regions, and this tour was the best. Nico knows which wineries to visit, is knowledgeable (I am a wine nerd), and also personable. Truly, this was like having an old friend show you his favorite wineries in an area he knows better than most. As soon as I am back in the Barcelona/Penedes area, I will call him immediately. Give him your business and you won't be disappointed.

Wonderful day!! We enjoyed a great Penedes wine tour with Nico. We visited two wineries that are farming sustainably, had private tours and tastings, and ended the day with a lunch in a local restaurant where we were definitely the only Americans there. It was a perfect day in the Catalonian Wine Country.

WOW, FANTASTIC, PERFECT - are the words that come to mind to describe our private wine tour with Nico James!!! He was brilliant with knowledge of both Barcelona and particularly... wine and the wine country. Our trip to the 2 wineries rate up there with Epic!!!

I bought this as a surprise for my parents 60th birthday trip. They had a wonderful time, Nico was an excellent guide and introduced them to new wines and a lovely local restaurant.

One of the highlights to our trip to Barcelona! Loved visiting the larger Cava makers along with the smaller boutique wineries. Very special trip, very personable and professional tour operator. Would book again with them next visit:)

This was an all inclusive guided tour for my husband & me of two wineries located 45 minutes from Barcelona. Guy and Alfiya picked us up from our Barcelona apartment and guided us through Codorniu (one of the largest cava producers) and Felix Massana Rafols (an independent wine producer). Codorniu is very large and impressive, but Felix Massana Rafols was an amazing personal tour by the owner himself! Cristina (Felix's wife) prepared an amazing tapas lunch (the best spanish tortilla we've ever ate!), and we dined with Felix and had the opportunity to taste his wines and converse with him over lunch! My husband and I would highly recommend this, as we had an unforgettable and personal experience!

I found cheaper packages elsewhere but what I liked about this one is that you really get to taste several wines and it's very relaxed and friendly. Admittedly I didn't go on any of the others I read about but I got the impression that the tasting was limited to just a few different vintages and mostly Cavas... where as this was varied, we could go back to the ones we liked and have more, and we enjoyed a great meal in the bargain. Definitely recommended. Also the group size was limited to a maximum of 8 and in fact no one else signed up on the day we went so it ended up being a private tour:)
