Spain 1 Portugal 0

Crack open the Cava, Spain have advanced into the quarter finals in a hard fought match against local rivals Portugal. Man-for-man Spain are considered a superior side to the current Portuguese crop, but hey they said that about England over Germany so what do 'they' know... the Portuguese certainly weren't following the script in the first half where they looked the most threatening, keeping possession better than their Spanish counterparts, although out and out chances were few and far between.

Vincent Del Bosque must have still had a few firecrackers left over from Sant Juan, because his team came out in the second half as if someone had put a rocket under their collective backside. Suddenly Portugal were on the back foot. Fernando Llorente executed a superb diving header in the 61st minute to get on the end of defence-beating cross, but unfortunately the Bilbao player couldn't get any direction on it... Eduardo, the Portuguese keeper, gathered it up, but the pressure was mounting. A minute later Spain got the break through - and a taste no doubt of what is to come at Barcelona FC next season. Iniesta made space for himself and played the ball in heavy traffic through to Xavi inside the area. Xavi then dragged the ball out to the left with the back of his heel - an audacious lay off which set up Villa with the perfect chance. His first effort was saved by Eduardo, but picking up the loose ball he drove it in on the second attempt! Goal Espana!

As it transpired, one was enough and Spain's world cup bid is looking in good shape as they go forward to face Paraguay in the quarter finals. Could this be their year???
