Spain Advance: Portugal Beckons!
It should have been a tense affair but what with David Villa's wonder strike in the 23rd minute and then a second goal from Iniesta on the 38rd (set up by Villa), the nerves of Spaniards around Barcelona quickly settled as their passage to the next round of the World Cup looked to be secured.
The situation became safer still as just after the second goal Estrada of Chile received a second yellow card for tripping Torres in the build up. (If that was accidental then there was nothing innocent about Estrada's first yellow, or the lucky escape he had after hacking Alonso from behind!).
Despite being reduced to ten men Chile did pull one back right after the restart with a deflected shot by Millar, but, as the Swiss were busy being held by Honduras in Group H's other game, the Chileans knew that they would qualify even if they lost to Spain... not a recipe for a cracking finale, and the final minutes were turgid stuff.
No matter: Spain have successfully topped their group, despite their shock loss to Switzerland on the opening game of the tournament, which means they will face Portugal in the next round in what should be a delicious match up - especially for neutrals! Like all neighbours the two nations enjoy an intense rivalry, and the presence of Real Madrid's contentious striker Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch will be sure to add further spice to the cauldron.
