Countdown to San Joan

It seems like life in Barcelona is one big party. No sooner has Sonar Festival packed its record bags and left the city than the next big event looms into view. San Joan (also known as San Juan in Castilian) is one of the biggest parties in the Catalan calendar and come midnight on the 23rd June the night sky will be spectacularly lit with thousands of fireworks and bonfires to celebrate the Summer solstice.

Parties, parades and pyrotechnics take it out of you so naturally enough the day of the 24th - the longest of the year - is a holiday, in honour of San Joan (or St. John the Baptist as you might know him).

Check out the city website for more info on precise celebrations for 2009. And remember kids, don't play with fireworks!
