Barcelona La Liga Champions
Epic celebrations took place around the city last night as Barcelona's beloved football club wrapped up La Liga with a 4-0 victory against Valladolid at Camp Nou.
The win meant Barcelona finished La Liga with a record haul of 99 points, a fact that Pep Guardiola generously attributed to Barcelona's arch-rivals Real Madrid: "I have to congratulate the coach and players of Real Madrid for an extraordinary campaign. Without them we would have not been able to get 99 points, they have pushed us all the way. They have dignified their profession and their club."
However good Madrid were though Barcelona were irresistible this season once more, losing only one league game all season (to Atletico Madrid), and masterfully led by the mercurial Lionel Messi who finished the season with a sensational 34 goals - silencing any doubters that he is the world's best player right now.
The focus of the celebrations took place as always at the Canalates Fountain, at the top of La Rambla, and on Plaza Catalunya. Earlier in the night the mood was exuberant but peaceful with plenty of chanting, firecrackers and beer-drinking. As is the way with a small-genitaled minority however things got out of hand later with the idiots in question vandalising property and clashing with police, causing over a hundred arrests. Anyway let's not dwell on those stupid enough to wake up in a holding cell this morning... and take some more time to mull over the incredible achievements of a team that is well on its way to being one of the greatest of all time! Visca Barca!
