Real Madrid Suffer Ridicule of the Century
'The Ridicule of the Century' was just one tag dished out by the Spanish press this morning as they queued up to pour salt on the wound of Real Madrid's historic loss to the 3rd division Alcorcon in the Copa del Rey. It wasn't just a loss, it was a rout as the unfashionable team of part-timers from the capital's industrial suburbs romped to an incredible four nil victory, dominating the toothless 'Los Blancos' who appeared to have lost their way ever since new signing Cristiano Ronaldo picked up an injury (they have lost three out of five without him). Despite missing the 80 million pound forward, Real Madrid were still fielding a team of ten internationals prompting many newspapers to call for coach Pelligrini's head this morning, with fans fearing that he has already lost the dressing room in his short tenure at the club.
Needless to say this debacle has raised a wry smile over in Catalonia, where FC Barcelona have enjoyed an excellent start to the season and look the stronger of the two great rivals despite Real Madrid's 256 million euro pre-season spending spree. Real Madrid will have a chance to atone in the return leg of the cup tie against Alcorcon but few will fancy them in their current form.
