Is Messi Best Player Of All Time?
As Barcelona destroyed Bayern Leverkeusen 7-1 in the second leg of their European tie, one man used the occasion to make footballing history. Lionel Messi became the first player ever to score five goals in a single Champions League match.
They weren't tap-ins either. The first was a sublime 'scoop' after Fabregas played a beautifully weighted ball over the top, the second a trademark cut inside onto his left boot buying himself time for a shot with a repeated tapping of the ball until the opportunity opened up. The third was a mirror of the first but on the right hand side, this time with a defender right on his shoulder. The fourth a finish from an acute angle after the keeper spilled the ball, the fifth a laser accurate finish from outside the area after being teed up by a teammate. Tello, on his CL debut, added two more goals and nearly stole the headlines with a hatrick, but the night belonged to Messi.
Once famously compared to a Playstation player by Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, former and current greats of the game have been queuing up to heap praise on the Argentine, with many taking his five goal haul against Leverkeusen as proof that he is the greatest player of all time. Bearing in mind that both the technical and physical standard of players playing at the top level has improved so much over the decades, to see one man so dominant and unstoppable certainly makes a strong case for him being placed above even the likes of Pele and Maradonna... but for more on this debate you can check this article in the Telegraph.
For now the important thing for cules, as Barca fans are know, is that they will progress into the next round of the Champions League, hopefully on their way to glory.
