One of Barcelona's most charming festivals, St. George's Day is a celebration of the dragon-slaying saint who is the patron of Catalonia as well as England. (In fact the two cultures have a surprising amount in common!). On the 23rd April the entire length of Las Ramblas will erupt with flower stalls, and men who wish to join in festivities should purchase a rose for dainty damsels they are fond of. Women are supposed to be equally generous, but their task is to pick out some reading material for the special men in their lives. After all, the legendary scribe, Miguel Cervantes died on this very day.
