Festes de la Merce

It's September already and that means visitors to BCN are in for an unusual treat. For a week, centring around the key date of the 24th, Barcelona celebrates the feast day its patron saint, the Virgin de la Merce, who rescued the city from a plague of locusts in 1687. Starting a couple of days beforehand all manner of parades, concerts (including several international acts) and parties will take place, including a procession of the giants, fireworks displays and 'castells' (human castle). You should be able to pick up a programme from the tourist office (there's one on Placa Catalunya).
