Off Sonar Parties
Our resident clubbing and dance music expert Katia, explains the joys of Off Sonar along with the programme for 2013
For one very long weekend every year Ibiza, New York and Berlin rest in silence. Virtually every single significant, promising, famous or underground artist and label will flow into Barcelona, for five days in June as the entire city becomes the venue of a huge multi-faceted, crazy, neverending party, called Off Sonar (an unofficial festival that takes place around the official Sonar parties).
Weeks in advance goosebumps begin while promoters poco a poco discover parties’ line-ups and venues. At some point many (incl. myself) can’t handle it anymore and only wish for 3, 4, 5... temporary clones with an extra one for sleeping in. (sigh) Unluckily, it’s not possible (or am I not well informed? enlighten me, if it is), but the good news is Barcelona Life is here for you to bring a bit of order into this happy chaos of 614 registered events...
Off Sonar 2013
Wednesday is a warm up day for many, but some significant beats are already flowing at Electric Minds & Mono Cult Party at BeCool, Suol + Exploited at Bloc and Ibiza’s Next Wave party feat. Valentino Kanzyani and friends at Almogavers 86.
Thursday can start for the 7th year in a row with magnificent views from the municipal pool (over the city and dancefloor mates’ bodies) and Mobilee’s stars Anja Schneider, Pan-Pot, Sebo K playing back to back with the invited Slam, Nic Fanciulli, Robbie Akbal and Safeword. More info.
Alternative for spending Thursday afternoon is 5th Edition of Save The Day party at Parc del Forum, with two stages and lives from Nathan Fake, Lone, Mr. G and sets from Shaun Reeves, Juan Atkins and more.
Indigo Raw is bringing a series of impossible to resist events starting with day party on thursday feat. lives from Sven Weisemann and Modern Deep Left Quartet and sets from Theo Parrish and Deetron. More info.
Last but not least day party is the annual Resident Advisor by Day on the Hotel Silken rooftop featuring Scuba, Bicep, Citizen and a secret guest.
My personal pick for Thursday night is Half Baked showcase with Petre Inspirescu, Cassy and Bruno Pronsato, bring your pirate outfit for this one.
East Ender festival is shorter this year, but not in quality. Four stages (one of them for free at Mac Arena Beach) and two nights of showcases from Cadenza, CLR, Mobilee and Cocoon and such stars as Chris Liebing, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Sims, Miss Kittin, Matthias Tanzmann & Davide Squillace, Anja Schneider and many many more.
Nitsa Club (in sala Apolo) is continuing their Versus Nights starring German label Kompakt (Michael Mayer) loving Comeme (Matias Aguayo and Avril Ceballo), Hot Flush (Scuba) and Numbers (Surgeon) showcases.
Bonobo Concept treats us with 16 hour day/night party in secret locations presenting 2020vision, Poker Flat & Supernature labels and endless line up with Steve Bug, Deetron, Audiofly just to name a few. More info.
Life and Death and Items and Things have united to bring us The Ultimate Legal Entertainment Experience Tale of Us, Magda, Troy Pierce, Dixon, live from Christian Löffler and many more. More info.
For more (in the sense of harder, not quantity) techno and minimal sounds on thursday night we recommend Tresor showcase at Almogavers, 86 and M_nus at Club4.
Most of the presale tickets are sold out, but organisers promise few on sale at the door, so COME EARLY!
Friday morning (no matter at what o'clock it will start for you) will meet you probably with a light hangover and a nice feeling of having danced your ass of and even nicer feeling of anticipation of 3 nights ahead which promise you some sets that will bring you very close to heaven, I promise. So without further introducation, here you go:)
Friday afternoon promises to be fantastic with 2 options, one better than another:
First, Wolf + Lamb side by side with Soul Clap followed by lives of PillowTalk and No Regular Play at Auditorium Open Air at Parc Del Forum.
At the same time, in another end of the city Mano Le Tough, Dixon and Âme will make sure are you lost in the moment , easy and weightless, floating the waves of the sounds.
The absolute champion of the night events is the Return party where the divinities of minimal Ricardo Villalobos, Jan Krueger and Sonja Moonear will make you believe you are in musical heaven.
Saturday day will bring us the pleasure to see showcase of Pampa Records with unbelievable (in many senses) DJ Koze, his mate Matthew Dear and a live set from Isolée.
Another worthy option of spending Sat afternoon is Open Air with Loco Dice & Jamie Jones.
To finish up the week-end, London's Secretsundaze party will start in early afternoon and last till late with a traditionally very well thought through line up.
A very nice surprise this year is that one of the most wanted parties is for free. It is German lable Kompakt celebrating its 20th anniversary (congrats!) with mind blowing line up of (again) DJ Koze, a master of minimal sounds Michael Mayer and a duo Pachanga Boys.
For more free of charge opptions check chiringuito Calamar and his neighbors in the beach of Prat.
And last but not least, a (Social) Experiment you want to be a part of with smoothiest Deniz Kurtel and everyone's favorites Art Department.
And remember, DANCING is good for your SOUL so enjoy!
